A spa is not a plastic hot tub bought off the shelf. It is a small pool, built into the ground with the same materials, with benches, massage jets and warm water, that matches the architecture of the house.

At a glance
A prefab spa is a pool of a few square metres with a bench or seats 50–70 cm deep, hydromassage jets with their own pump, and heating. It can stand alone or sit next to the main pool, sharing the edge.
How it is designed
We start with how many people will sit together. Benches go round the sides or along two of them, and the jets are placed at back and leg height. The membrane covers benches and floor as in any pool.

Massage with water and air
Two kinds of jet: water jets give a strong, focused flow, while air jets in the floor make bubbles that relax the whole body. The pumps are switched on by an air button at the edge, safe to use from the water.
Heating and cover
For a spa, heating is essential. A heat pump is the most economical option. The real secret to low running costs is the cover: without one, the heat is gone within hours, especially at night.
Spa and pool together
Many clients choose a small spa in the corner of the main pool that overflows into it. Guests can then move from warm to cool water. The circuit can be shared or separate, depending on use.

Questions & answers
How quickly does it heat up?
It depends on the volume, the air temperature and the heat pump. Because the volume is small, it heats much faster than a large pool.
Does it need different water chemistry?
The same measures as the pool, but checked more often, because warm water and few litres per person shift the values faster.
Can it go on a terrace?
With a structural check of the slab, yes. See the rooftop pool page.
