Plunge pool: a small footprint, plenty of cool water
A plunge pool is not made for laps. It is made for a dip after work, a glass of wine on the bench in the evening, a break from the midday heat. Small on the ground, generous in depth.
Fits on a terrace, in a patio or a corner of the garden

At a glance
A plunge pool is a small pool, usually around 2 to 3 m wide and 3 to 5 m long, deep enough to stand with the water at shoulder height. It often has a bench and heating, and comes close to the feel of a spa.
Where it fits
Town houses with a small courtyard or patio
Guest houses that want a pool per room or suite
Holiday homes with a view, where a big pool would hide the landscape
In every case we look, during the choice of location, at where the sun falls and where the wind blows.
Dark water, calm mood
In a small pool the membrane colour matters a lot. Dark shades make the water look deeper and cooler, and go well with timber and planting around it. Light shades bring freshness to narrow patios with little sun.

Heating and massage jets
A small volume means a small heat pump warms the water quickly. Add two or three hydromassage jets in the bench and the plunge pool becomes a little spa for the whole year.
The construction is the same
The same galvanised walls, the same membrane, the same filter and circulation as a large pool, just on a smaller scale. That is why the water quality is the same. The process is described step by step.

Questions & answers
How is it different from a small pool?
A small pool is a compact family pool. A plunge pool puts depth, the bench and often heating first: it is closer to relaxing than to playing.
Can it go on a terrace?
If there is a slab underneath, a structural check by an engineer is needed, because water is heavy. See the rooftop pool page.
Does it need a filter?
Yes, like any permanent pool. The water circulates, is filtered and disinfected in the normal way.
