A pool on the roof or a large terrace is a wonderful idea, especially in the city. It is also the project where preparation matters more than anything else. We always start with the engineer.
Structural check of the slab by an engineer
Light construction, materials carried up in sections
Water weighs one tonne per cubic metre. A pool 1.2 m deep loads the slab with more than 1.2 tonnes per square metre, plus the structure and the people. That is why no rooftop pool starts without a structural study.
What the engineer checks
Whether the slab and beams can carry the load, and exactly where.
Whether strengthening is needed, or a steel base that spreads the weight onto the columns.
The existing roof waterproofing and drainage.
Only once there is a positive assessment do we design the pool. If needed, we help with the communication with your engineer.
Why prefab helps here
Steel wall sections go up by hoist or by the stairs, one at a time. No concrete mixer in the street, no tonnes of concrete on the roof. The pool is built on top of the floor and the cladding round it hides the buttresses, just like an above-ground pool.
Depth, water and equipment
On a roof we suggest shallower depths, often around 1.10 m, to keep the load down. The equipment goes into a sealed cabinet with a drain for the backwash water. A heated plunge pool is often the ideal answer.
Before you call
If you have the building drawings or the structural study, take photos of them. Together with a few photos of the roof and the stairwell, they tell us a lot from the start.

Questions & answers
Can it be done on any roof?
No. It depends on the structural capacity of the building. Some roofs cannot take a pool without strengthening, and only the engineer can say so.
What if there is a leak?
The membrane is watertight on its own. The roof waterproofing stays in place underneath, as a second line of protection.
Does it need a permit?
Yes, and usually a more careful file than a pool in the ground, because of the structural study.
