At a glance
We dig a little larger than the pool, to leave space for buttresses, pipework and backfill. The floor is shaped to its final depth and slopes and smoothed, so nothing shows through under the membrane.
What ground we have
At the visit we check whether the ground is soil, clay, stony or rock. Rock needs a breaker and more time. Clay swells with water and needs good drainage. All of this affects the cost and the schedule.
Groundwater
Near the sea or in low spots there may be water close to the surface. We then add drainage under and around the pool, so groundwater cannot lift the membrane when the pool is drained.
The floor
The floor is shaped with a fine, stable material and smoothed. In pools with a shallow zone or a slope, this is where the geometry is made. Every stone or bump would show under the membrane, so smoothing is patient work.

Where the soil goes
A pool produces many cubic metres of soil. Part of it is reused for backfill or landscaping, the rest leaves by lorry for a licensed site. We discuss it beforehand, so you know what will happen to your garden.
