A pool on a slope: turning the gradient into an advantage
A sloping plot usually comes with a view. Instead of digging deep and building big retaining walls, the pool can sit half in the ground and half out. The exposed side is clad in timber or stone and becomes a bench.
Steel walls with their buttresses hold up even when the pool is not fully buried. So a pool can be fully in-ground, partly sunk or completely above the ground, with the same technology.
Three ways to sit in the ground
In-ground: we dig and add retaining where needed.
Partly sunk: the low side stands 40–70 cm above the soil.
Above ground: on a level slab, clad all round.
The right answer depends on the ground, the view and how you want to get into the water. We decide at the visit, with level readings.
The frame up close
In an above-ground pool the buttresses stay visible until they are clad. Pipework runs along the side to the plant room, which can be hidden under the bench or in a pit next to it.

Cladding: timber, stone or render
The visible side is finished to suit the house: timber or composite for a warm look, stone for stone houses, render and paint for modern architecture. With a hidden LED strip at the base, at night the pool seems to float.

Safety and children
A pool that stands above the ground makes it harder for small children to fall in by accident. It does not replace supervision or a safety cover.

Questions & answers
Can it be fully above ground?
Yes, on a level and stable base. It needs careful design of the buttresses and cladding all the way round.
Do I save on excavation?
Less digging usually means less spoil and fewer days with a machine. Cladding adds work though. The full picture is in the written quote.
Can it be an infinity pool?
On sloping plots, an infinity edge facing downhill is often the most natural solution.
