Small pool: cool water in the courtyard without giving up the garden
You do not need a big plot to have a pool. A townhouse courtyard or a back garden can take a small pool with the right depth, a bench to sit on and lights for the evenings.

At a glance
By “small pool” we usually mean under 20 m² of water surface. At that size a prefab pool has a big advantage: the walls can go into places where a large digger or a concrete mixer cannot reach.
What fits in a small courtyard
Before we talk about dimensions, we look at what has to stay free: a path round the pool, room for two loungers, distance from the boundaries. Often a long, narrow pool along the fence leaves more garden than a squarer one.
Technician's tipMark the size you have in mind on the ground with string and pegs, and leave it there for two days. You will know straight away whether it crowds the space.
A bench in the water
In a small pool the steps can double as a bench. One wide step across the full width, about 40 cm under the surface, becomes the favourite spot for a chat with your feet in the water.

Equipment in a tight space
Filter, pump and control panel fit into a small sealed pit or a cabinet at the edge of the courtyard. We choose an inverter pump so it does not hum next to bedrooms and neighbours.
Warm water most of the year
A small volume of water heats up quickly. With a small heat pump and a cover, a small pool can be used from spring until late autumn. If you also want massage jets, see the spa.

Questions & answers
Does a small pool need a permit?
Yes, a small pool also needs a small-scale works approval. The paperwork is the same as for a larger pool up to 50 m².
How deep should it be?
To stand and cool off comfortably, around 1.20–1.30 m. Shallower if it is mainly for children or relaxing.
Will it get through a narrow entrance?
Usually yes. The walls travel section by section, and in tight access the dig is done with a mini excavator.
