How small can it be

Small pool sizes: what fits in your yard

The most common question from people with a small yard is 'how small can it be?'. The answer depends on three things: what you want to do in the water, how much space must stay free around it and how deep you want it.

  • From about 3 × 2 m for a plunge pool
  • A table of water volume for each size
  • Always with a small-scale works approval

At a glance

A small prefab pool starts at about 3 × 2 metres for a plunge pool and goes up to 6 × 3 metres for family use. Beyond that it is a normal garden pool.

Common sizes

SizeSurfaceWater at 1.20 m depthFor
3 × 2 m6 m²about 7 m³Plunge pool, cooling off, a bench
4 × 2 m8 m²about 10 m³Two adults, dips, relaxing
5 × 2.5 m12.5 m²about 15 m³A couple with a child, a few strokes
6 × 3 m18 m²about 22 m³A family, play, swimming on the spot

Volume is length × width × depth. Less water means faster heating, a smaller filter and fewer chemicals.

The space we leave around it

  • A path of about 80 cm on the sides you walk along.
  • Room for two loungers or a seating area on the sunny side.
  • A small spot for the plant room, often a pit in a corner.
  • The distances from the plot boundaries your engineer sets.

In a 30 m² yard a 4 × 2 m pool leaves room to live around it. 50 m² easily takes 5 × 2.5 m, and 80 m² a 6 × 3 m pool.

Depth for a small pool

In a small pool depth matters more than length. At about 1.20 m adults stand with the water at chest height and children play on the steps. For a plunge pool we go a little deeper, for families with young children shallower, with a shallow zone. More in size and depth.

A shape that saves space

A long, narrow pool along the fence leaves more free garden than a square one in the middle. Steps across the full width double as a bench and save the space of a stainless ladder.

Questions & answers

What is the smallest pool you build?

About 3 × 2 m, as a plunge pool. Smaller than that it becomes a spa, see the spa and hydromassage page.

Does a 3 × 2 pool need a permit?

Yes. Even the smallest permanent pool needs a small-scale works approval from an engineer.
