At a glance
A rectangle is the most efficient shape for steel-wall construction: every section is straight, the corners are exact, the membrane sits without wrinkles and a roller cover fits perfectly.
Which sizes work
There is no “right” size, only the size that suits how you live. A couple who mainly want to cool off will be happy with around six metres in length. A family with children who bring friends home will enjoy something longer and wider. If you are thinking about swimming lengths, think about length before width.
Keep an eye on the 50 m² water-surface threshold: up to that point the paperwork is the small-scale works permit. Above it, the procedure changes.
Steps: the big decision
The steps are where a family spends most of its time: parents sit there, toddlers play, someone has a coffee with their feet in the water. We build steps across the full width of one side, or corner steps that take less space from the swimming area.

Where space is tight, a stainless ladder on one side does the same job without eating into the water.
One depth or two?
We usually suggest a constant depth of around 1.40 m, so adults can stand everywhere. For families with small children, a gentle floor slope works well, shallower near the steps and deeper at the far end. The choice also changes the water volume, and therefore the heating. More in size and depth.
The edge sets the character
In a skimmer pool the water sits a little below the edge, so the coping is part of the picture. White marble for a clean island look, timber or composite for warmth, stone if the house already has stone. It is the difference between a pool that was dropped into the garden and one that belongs there.
