At a glance
An inverter pump runs most of the time at low speed, where consumption drops dramatically, and only speeds up for backwashing or vacuuming. The water is filtered more slowly but more effectively.
Why low speed pays
A pump's power draw does not fall in proportion to its speed, it falls much faster. So a pump turning at half speed uses far less than half the electricity. Running more hours at low speed turns over the same volume of water at a lower cost.
Quiet next to the house
At low speed an inverter pump is barely audible. That matters for small pools next to bedrooms, town houses with neighbours and rentals where guests sleep with the window open.
Running programmes
From day one we set a programme: low speed for most hours, higher for a while in the morning for a good surface clean. With Wi-Fi you change it from your phone, for example when guests arrive or you go away.
Technician's tipIn summer, with heat and lots of swimmers, increase the running hours. In winter, with a cover on, they can be reduced noticeably.
The plant room
Pump, filter, panel and heating go into a sealed pit or a covered space close to the pool. The closer it is, the lower the pressure losses in the pipes. See also filtration.
